WET WEATHER WOES HIT ANOTHER GOOD MELBOURNE RACE DAY [ More Items ]
Life is a laugh a minute if you have a furtive imagination. I had to roll on the ground doing Louie The Fly impersonations after reading this harness racing headline on the front of today's Sportsman. How about a quinella of "the headline" into the top pacer Adam Fairley has mentioned in his Albion Park preview - "Mr Feelgood".
03/09/10

Wet weather has decimated the racing in recent months in both Sydney and Melbourne and that pattern looks likely to continue tomorrow as Melbourne is set for rain after the Flemington track got back to a “dead 4” this morning from a “slow 6” Thursday.

In Sydney, trainer Peter Snowden has warned that “heavy rain” last night may affect the Randwick surface tomorrow adding that “it won’t take much rain” to get it back to where it was (carved up, track bias, etcetera), so punters should be aware of the astute trainer’s statement if further rain falls tonight even though it was a “dead 4” late this morning.

Racing Queensland Chief Handicapper Lester Grimmett has sent the scaled weights through for tomorrow’s Eagle Farm meeting and they read: Race 1 + 1 kg, Race 2 + 0.50 kg, Race 4 +0.50 kg, Race 5 + 3.5 kgs, Race 7 + 2 kgs and Race 8 + 0.50 kgs.

Brad Tamer from Unitab has sent through the Unitab jackpot information for tomorrow and that reads.

Today on www.brisbaneracing.com.au I preview the Danehill Stakes at Flemington, on www.sydneyracing.com.au I look at the Ming Dynasty Handicap at Randwick, whilst on www.melbourneracing.com.au Tim Hickman looks at Flemington.

From the Brisbane Racing Club Sean Bridges advises the Eagle Farm track is a "good 3" as at late today. Showers are forecast but Sean doesn't think there is enough rain in them to change the track rating.

I have had several emails about what transpired from the exclusive  that was put up on Lindsay Gallagher’s column Monday about the trackwork blue in Toowoomba and one trainer has received a three month suspension over that incident. The Racing Queensland website article on that incident reads:

Date:  Wednesday, 1 September 2010 1:46 PM

Industry:  Thoroughbreds

TOOWOOMBA OFFICE - WEDNESDAY 01/09/2010

Racing Queensland Limited conducted a stewards' inquiry on September 1, 2010 at their Toowoomba office where licensed trainer Darryle Leslie BRUSNAHAN appeared in relation to an incident that occurred at the Toowoomba Racecourse on the August 23, 2010. Another licensed trainer, Brett Corey BAKER, complained that he had been assaulted by trainer Brusnahan.

Brusnahan appeared to answer a charge against AR175 (q): The Committee of any Club or the Stewards may penalise any person who in their opinion is guilty of any misconduct, improper conduct or unseemly behaviour.

The charge against Brusnahan was: "That on 23 August 2010 you, Darryle Leslie Brusnahan, at the Toowoomba Racecourse whilst attending trackwork did misconduct yourself by physically assaulting one Brett Corey Baker."

Trainer Brusnahan pleaded guilty to the breach of AR175 (q) and his trainer's licence was disqualified for three (3) months commencing on September 1, 2010 and ending at midnight on December 1, 2010.

Galilee is out on weekend release and sent this report through on Adelaide and his thoughts are:

Last week, due to the track conditions we stayed out once again. Tomorrow, at this stage we have a Dead 5. Bellamo is in again – Race 5, I tipped it a couple of weeks ago and is a chance this week – but gets back. I also like The Long Road – Race 6, it also gets back.

If the track is worse than a Dead 5 – my recommendation is for the hands to stay in the pockets. (Editors footnote – garbage - double up on the other website tips)

I am going for value and in Race 7, 1400 metres - I am going to select Roy Rajas. The Murray Bridge trained 6YO gelding is second up – he has never won second up but is very consistent. Has a place strike rate of 50% with a win rate of 21% from 28 starts. That’s not too bad. At the track and distance he is 1/1 and on a Dead track he is 6 starts for 2.0.3. His recent record shows that he does not put many starts together so he must have some issues. On checking his ‘gear report’ nothing shows up in this regard. If Roy Rajas repeats his last run he will be hard to beat in this. His last start third to Starlite was a good run after being wide most of the way. The form has held up with Gocanny, 4th in that race, having won mid week in a very good field. I expect the pace to be true in this race – and from barrier 8 Roy Rajas should ease over and take up a good position. This is a track being, in my opinion, very favourable to leaders/on pacers and this is an element we have to take into consideration when we punt as do they who ‘sit on top’. Roy Rajas usually races back – let’s hope not too far – Matthew Neilson stays ‘on top’; Matthew - we are in your hands.

Selection: 13 e/way.

Good Luck

Prizemoney is going to be “realigned” in Tasmanian harness racing so we need that idea to spread north across Bass Straight. The Media Release sent through earlier today by Jim Robb reads:

Tasracing will realign stakes for feature harness races for the 2010/11 season.

A total of $230,000 from 11 feature races in Hobart, Launceston and Devonport will be redistributed to additional Sunday twilight races and Monday and Wednesday Sky meetings.  In addition races that carry a stake of $4,700 at Monday and Wednesday meetings will increase to $5,000.

Tasracing Chief Executive Officer Gary Lottering said the decision by the Board would redirect prize money to Tasmanian-based harness racing participants.

“This redirection will provide the local industry with vital stakes funding to develop a critical mass of racing stock that the state needs to ensure a regular and reliable supply of product,” he said.

“In addition, it is anticipated that the realignment will result in an increased number of races covered by Sky Channel that will ultimately improve the state’s share of the national harness market.

“It should also increase overall starter numbers and provide a greater return on investment for local breeders and owners.”

Mr Lottering said the legislation under which Tasracing operates requires that we develop an efficient and effective racing industry.

“The decision to realign funding to benefit grassroots harness racing in Tasmania is a good one for the broader industry and sits comfortably within the requirements of the legislation,” he said.

As part of the overall allocation to the Harness Code for 2010/11, country club stakes of $3,500 will also receive a top up of $300 to $3,800.

The Albion Park preview for tomorrow night from Adam Fairley reads.

Spring has sprung and with it the majority of last seasons 2 & 3yo's have been put to pasture after a long campaign.

As such claiming races are back in the fold at Albion Park Raceway for the months of September and October.

As highlighted in last weeks review Korlim Garry who came to Queensland for John McCarthy early last season cashed in on the claiming events winning 12 and placing on 13 occasions for $63k in prize money.

The Classic Garry now 11 year old will line up against some other formidable foes again this Saturday night.

12 year old Nickys Falcon took out the Redcliffe Cup only three starts ago, the consistent Falcon Seelster gelding raced 40 times last season for 10 wins, 14 minors and $76k in stakes.

11 year old son of Albert Albert Arapal also raced on 40 occasions and predominately contested claiming events.  He won 11 races, placed in another 11 and amassed $74k for the season.

The trio are joined on Saturday night by some claiming maiden's in Jetsons Blue Jean ($10,000), Gracious Legend ($20,000) and Itsokaytobefake ($20,000).

The three aforementioned are by Christian Cullen, In The Pocket and Fake Left, respectively have won $67k, $68k and $118k individually and have a good few years of racing left in their legs.

As proved by the feats of the three veterans there is plenty of prize money to be won by claiming horses and new owners to the sport could do no worse than to consider purchasing one of the well performed conveyances to race on with during the 2010/11 racing season.

After a short hiatus, the open class performers return to headquarters this week over the sprint journey of 1660m.

The field appears an even one with Fake Left entire Rainbow Stride being best drawn to arrest the lead from noted barrier flyer Beef City Beau who traditionally leads and takes a sit.

However last weeks all the way winner Honky Tonk Hanover may have something to say about the race panning out that way.

Trainer Murray Sullivan is hoping that the gelded son of Western Hanover can get closer to the track record mark of 1.52.1 set by Mr Feelgood.

Having won in 1.54.6 last week and not having to expand much energy in the run to the line there is every chance that this race will be run quicker due to the early pace of Beef City Beau and the rise in class to an open event.

Murray Sullivan replaces Ray Law (the Minister of Speed) for Saturday nights assignment, which incidentally is the horses 100th race start.

The first race rolls later this week at 5.45pm, the last of 9 races commences at 9.37pm.

2010 Riverfire will be shown from 6.30pm-7.30pm, while Before The Game at 7.30pm will preclude the bounce of the Sherrin at the Collingwood vs. Western Bulldogs match at 8.30pm on selected televisions in Pacesetters.
